From Corporate to Coaching
I REMEMBER THE EXACT MOMENT I DECIDED TO LEAVE MY CUSHY CORPORATE JOB. I WAS DONE.
I remember sitting across the desk from my boss in his office.
He was talking about one of our projects, and my eyes started to wander over all the things in his office.
I saw the photo of his family behind him, and his briefcase on the floor.
I noticed he was wearing a button-down shirt, not unlike the one I was used to shopping for at Express.
I started to wonder about his 3 weeks of vacation a year, and his commute. They were remarkably similar to mine.
And the thought came to me:
If I am aiming to be HIM in 10 years… that means that I will have only moved 3 feet from where I was right now.
And that’s the moment I knew: there had to be more, and there was nobody in my life showing me what or how.
The realization was a frightening one:
Nobody is coming to save you.
That’s when I started to explore and experiment. You name it, I tried it:
I took French classes, violin and piano lessons, learned about medical terminology, volunteered at hospitals…
All to try to find my purpose.
Then one day during maternity leave with my first son, my old roommate from college asked me to help her friend with her website.
To my surprise, her friend wanted to pay me. After a futile attempt to decline the money, she insisted.
“You are a vendor, and I’m running a business, here’s your payment.”
And so began my search for my place in the business world.
